Comments from former teachers

Initially, Japan was a destination for escape from the everyday, a place to make money while traveling, a new adventure and an exciting endeavor after being locked up in the academic institution for some seventeen-odd years. Eventually, I landed in Nagoya after a long flight and a the owner of Teragoya greeted and escorted me to my new home and place of work, Ichinomiya-shi, Aichi-ken, Japan. I was made felt welcome immediately.

At first shocked and overwhelmed, wondering why I left my home country for a place so foreign and unfamiliar, I was soon comforted by the endearing Japanese character, courteousness and delightful, kind and generous in spirit and gifts. Everyday, I was welcomed and loved by my students, respected and treated with care by my employers, embraced and included by my co-workers; I never felt so fulfilled and eager to give back joy as much as I did in Japan. Aside from the great professional development in teaching English, working at Teragoya was like being paid to make friends and rich cultural exchange. Serendipitously, my experience at Teragoya led me to a Bachelor of Education and a career in International Education. I never thought a little stint in Japan would change my life and help me realize my passions and career path.

After two years, I made a family of friends, both Japanese and foreign, initially through my teaching experiences at Teragoya. Even today, after having been gone from Japan for three years, I feel a hole, a something missing from my life. Today, I have best friends from many countries, stories of an exciting youth, and an understanding and appreciation for new cultures and languages. My Japanese friends and my “family” at Teragoya are people I will always remember and return to in memory; and if money and time permits, I will visit them every year and perhaps return to teach at Teragoya again.

Thank you "Teragoya Family". I love you and miss you!
